"A Classical Masterpiece: The Art of Creation"

A project to decorate a restaurant in a classical style originated with the hotel's manager. This project was executed by artists from the Florence Classical Arts Academy, notably the academy's founder, Nadezhda Molugova. All works were created using the techniques and knowledge of the old masters.

We want to share the complexity and time-consuming nature of creating such paintings. For those unfamiliar with classical painting, a single work can take from one to twelve months to complete. For those interested in learning about the creation process, the artist shares one of the classical methods:

Canvas Preparation: The canvas is prepared for copying with a special color, (priming), that corresponds to the original work. A drawing is then applied to the canvas, following the methods of the old masters.

Initial Sketch: The first sketch is created using a brush and oil paint. The canvas is revealed in a limited palette, often using the grisaille technique for the initial unveiling.

Detail Refinement: The details are refined using a limited palette technique. Depending on the complexity of the work, this stage can take several weeks.

Introduction of Color: Work on the grisaille begins to be complemented by color in the background, transitioning from grisaille to color. The entire work comes to life.

Color and Tone Deepening: After applying color backgrounds, the artist works on deepening the tone and color throughout the painting. Each detail is carefully modeled.

Final Analysis and Varnishing: At this stage, the entire painting is analyzed, and necessary generalizations are made. After thorough drying, the work is covered with varnish.

A single painting like this can take from one to four months to complete if done correctly and with adherence to the technique.
